Module: FIN2704 (Finance)

AY18/19 Sem 1

Grading:

  • Project: 10%
  • Class Participation: 25%
  • Midterm Exam: 25%
  • Final Exam: 40%

Review 1:

Lecturer & Tutor: Low Jeng Hock, Winston

What it’s about: The module covers the fundamentals on finance principles and how to assess the financial performance through methods such as NPV (Net Present Value) and IRR (Internal Rate of Return).

Assignment workload: Nil. But with regards to the tutorials, the workload is not very heavy (typically can be completed in 1-2hrs).

Thoughts about the tutor: Very chill. However, he gives many opportunities for class participation and tries to provide real world examples. Not bad in my opinion.

Project workload & question/theme: Not very heavy. Project consists of mainly Excel work on financials to assess the financial performance of a firm, plus linking how the actual project review is implemented.

Readings: Very light. Just need to cover the slides before sectionals, and the content is not very heavy.

Exam: Both Midterms and Finals are in MCQ format, 30 MCQs for Midterms and 40 MCQs for finals.

The midterm was generally easier than the finals, as some of the MCQ questions for finals require many steps and take a lot of time to complete. Do make sure you plan your time effectively when taking the paper.

Practice very intensely using the past year papers, if you want to score well for the final paper.

Recommended if : Very good fundamental module for those looking to explore finance as a minor/for interest. For those in NUS Business School, it is a core module. If your math skills are not very good, this may not be an ideal module as Finance is traditionally math heavy.
